ABOUT
Lance Bannister is a 21-year-old artist, with autism, and a recent graduate of the REACH program at Haddon Heights High School in New Jersey. Lance lives with his loving family and is very curious about the beauty in everything around him.
Naturally working in the style of Neo-Expressionism, Lance is gifted with the ability to record any subject, from photos or life observation, employing quick, confident, graffiti-like linework. His images become an instant snapshot of what he is experiencing at that moment. Although Lance can draw a continuous set of simple contour lines, his painted compositions, symbolic and abstract, are an explosion of visual activity with color applications that are bold and always outside of the boundaries.
In the studio setting, Lance works both sequentially and confluently, as he is encouraged by his Aide and school mentor, Jeffrey Eppright. Most of his paintings begin with a collage of images, or a montage of his sketches, that he composes using the selection, cut, and paste technique. Next, the artist translates the composition onto a canvas using direct observation or a projector for larger surfaces. The medium of choice is acrylic paint, India ink, tissue paper, and sometimes a Krink mop marker.
In April of 2022, at the Y.A.L.E. Tri-state Dis Ability Art Show, Lance was awarded by The Penn Museum for his representation of Native Americans in both collage and painting. Following that event, in June of 2022, Lance Bannister had his first solo exhibit of over 30 recent paintings and drawings, as well as a large-scale mobile. Also featured were portraits of Lance by photographer Robert Szatmari , included here, to help launch Lance’s career as both art maverick and fashion model. This endeavor was envisioned and organized by his Art Teacher and creative mentor, Joseph Smargisso.
